How To Naturally Reverse Lip Fillers

Reverse lip fillers

Dermal fillers are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in today’s market, and they can be used for a variety of skin and lip concerns. When properly placed, fillers can temporarily erase lines and wrinkles from the face, as well as plump and reshape the lips. However, injections can be performed incorrectly, leaving you with too much volume, asymmetry, or volume in the wrong places that make you look overdone, or older than younger.

If you’re unhappy with your filler results, hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed.

Reversing Subpar Lip Injections

When appropriately performed under the direction of a board-certified cosmetic surgeon or licensed physician assistant, dermal filler injections typically produce symmetrical, subtle, and natural-looking results. However, cosmetic medicine isn’t an exact science, and even in the best hands, patients occasionally have less-than-ideal outcomes with dermal fillers. In a small percentage of instances, a patient’s body can react poorly to the product for no reason, resulting in prolonged swelling or lumpiness.

Wait Two Weeks

Hyaluronic acid fillers work by pulling water into themselves. During this process, the plumping and smoothing effect is created. Because this process can take up to two weeks to stabilize, you may notice some minor swelling the first few weeks after treatment. Bruising and small bumps are other common side effects that can occur immediately after getting fillers. There are ways to minimize side effects, including avoiding nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, taking arnica supplements, avoiding alcohol, and by not exercising for at least 24 hours after getting filler injections.

Swelling and bruising immediately following injections can take up to two weeks to diminish. We always recommend waiting at least two weeks for these side effects to subside before determining if you’re dissatisfied with your results. If you’re still unhappy with what you see after this amount of time, then we can proceed with the process of reversing the fillers.

Removing Juvederm and Other Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

If you are displeased with your final results, or simply wish they looked different in certain areas, it is often possible for a skilled physician to make corrections to improve the outcome of your results.

Massage – Mild symptoms such as moderate lumps or slight asymmetry can often be improved or resolved by massaging the area. Your provider can perform the massage or instruct you in the proper technique to help alleviate symptoms at home.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers – Products including Juvederm, Voluma, and Volbella can be partially or entirely removed with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. When injected, hyaluronidase dissolves the hyaluronic acid particles to help correct:

  • Overfilling or dissatisfying results
  • Excessive or prolonged swelling
  • Infection in the treatment area
  • A lumpy or irregular texture that doesn’t respond to massage
  • Vascular compromise, which occurs when a filler is injected too close to a blood vessel, interfering with blood flow. This is extremely rare with a qualified, experienced injector.

Improving Non-Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Hyaluronidase only helps to dissolve the hyaluronic acid fillers, and will not help to correct filers such as Radiesse, Bellafill, and Sculptra. In these cases, a steroid injection may help to reverse the effects of some of these non-hyaluronic fillers to an extent. However, the only surefire way to correct the bad results of these fillers is to wait for them to be absorbed by the body.

It may take a year or more for the filler to fade naturally. A skilled provider may be able to improve your results considerably through the strategic placement of additional fillers. Under certain rare circumstances, fillers can be surgically removed if the results are medically necessary.

Only Trust Your Lips With The Best Providers

The best way to ensure you will love your filler results is to have your filler injections done right the first time. Choosing a provider with the knowledge and experience to determine the appropriate filler for your needs and the skill to inject the fillers safely and precisely will help you to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results. Learn about each provider’s reputation, experience, and ask to see before and after photos of other patients before selecting a provider.
